Official: Real Madrid loan out Golden Eaglets-eligible right-back to Bayer Leverkusen
Published: August 23, 2023With a statement on their official website, German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of talented Golden Eaglets-eligible right-back Melvin Ukpeigbe from Real Madrid.
A Spain U16 international who is eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents, Ukpeigbe joins the Werkself on a season-long loan and he will initially play for Bayer Leverkusen U17s.
A purchase option has been included in the deal taking him to Bayer Leverkusen.
Ukpeigbe has been on the books of Real Madrid since the age of ten after he was snapped up from Rayo Vallecano where he spent two years, 2015-2017.
By joining Bayer Leverkusen, the Spanish-Nigerian defender is following in the footsteps of Dani Carvajal who left the Real Madrid academy to join Bayer Leverkusen before re-joining Los Blancos.
Ukpeigbe was left out of Real Madrid's squad to the 2023 International Youth Championship because a transfer was on the cards.
Bayer Leverkusen's first team is coached by Xabi Alonso, who won La Liga, UEFA Champions League,Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España during his five-year association with Real Madrid.
The BayArena outfit signed Nigerian striker Victor Boniface this summer and have been linked with a move for Southampton winger Nathan Tella.
