Man Utd midfielder eligible for Nigeria, England gets double promotion in Poland youth team set-up
Published: August 24, 2023
Manchester United defensive midfielder Maxi Oyedele has earned a double promotion in the Poland youth team set-up, jumping two levels from the U19s to U21s.
Born in Salford to a Nigerian father and Polish mother, Oyedele is spoilt for choice over the country to represent internationally at senior level as he is eligible for England, Nigeria and Poland.
However, the Polish Football Association are in the driving seat for his services having provisionally cap-tied him on September 21, 2022 when he came off the bench for the last 17 minutes of European U19 Championship qualifier against Bosnia.
Oyedele could not represent the Poles last month in the U19 Euro because he was with Manchester United's first team for the start of their pre-season preparations.
The 2004-born player traveled with the first team to Norway for the friendly against Leeds United, before making his non-competitive debut against Wrexham in the United States.
The coach of the Polish national under-21 team, Michał Probierz, has announced the list of players from foreign clubs, called up for September's qualifying matches for the final tournament of the European Championship, with Oyedele among three-foreign based players getting invites.
The other players called up are Jakub Kaluzinski (Antalyaspor) and Aleksander Buksa (WSG Tirol).
Poland U21s will face Kosovo on September 8 in Płock and four days later meet Estonia in Tallinn.
