Confirmed: Son of former Super Eagles defender joins West Brom after Aston Villa exit
Published: August 24, 2023
With a statement on their official website, West Brom have announced the signing of Ruben Shakpoke, the son of former Super Eagles defender Jero Shakpoke.
The 19-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Championship side with an option of a further year which can only be triggered by the club.
Shakpoke has been on trial with the Baggies and was given chances to show his potential by featuring in West Brom U21s' opening two matches in the Premier League 2 against Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers respectively.
He scored a goal in West Brom's 3-3 draw with Blackburn Rovers and his performance has impressed Academy manager, Richard Stevens.
Stevens believes the young attacker will be a good signing for the club and the Hawthorns is a good place for him to develop.
"Ruben will be a good signing for us and I believe this will be a great place for him to be as well," he told the club's website.
He added: "He’s a great boy, is really humble, has come in and really embraced what Albion is all about and he’s really buying into the work we’ve been doing with him since he’s joined us.
"Hopefully, this can be a place he can settle, work himself out and I think it’ll be a good place for him."
The former England U15 International was released by Aston Villa at the end of the last campaign after 3 years at the club which was plagued with injuries
This explains why he could only manage a combined 14 appearances for Aston Villa U18s and the development side and it is no surprise that he couldn't feature for the first-team
Shakpoke will be hoping for better days ahead as he officially begins his sojourn as a West Brom player.
He could make his third appearance for West Brom when they face Sunderland tomorrow in the Premier League 2.
