'A great player' - Madueke hails Chelsea's brand new signing Palmer
Published: September 01, 2023
Super Eagles-eligible winger Noni Madueke has expressed his delight in Chelsea signing his England U21 teammate Cole Palmer.
Chelsea have announced the signing of the Manchester City Academy product on a seven-year deal with the option of a further year.
The England youth international was brought in to bolster the Blues' attacking options as he can play either as a right winger or a number 10.
Madueke is no stranger to Palmer as they are teammates in the England U-21 team and both played a vital role in their triumph at the 2023 European U21 Championship.
The former PSV Eindhoven winger has expressed his happiness upon the arrival of his new teammate and hopes he helps Chelsea achieve their objective of returning to the Champions League.
"When you play for Chelsea, you play for one of the best clubs in the world. Of course there’s always going to be competition for places,” Madueke was quoted as saying by Hayters TV.
"Obviously we want to get Champions League next year so obviously we need top players in every position.
"We’re very close, me and Cole. We’ve been playing for England together since we were 14-years-old, so I welcome him.
"I know him really well. We won the Euros together in the summer, so he’s a great lad and a great player as well.
"Obviously he grew up playing in the middle, but he plays on the left and the right. It’s what the gaffer decides, but he’s a top player and you want top players coming in the building because it helps you compete.”
Maduke has had a slow start to the new season due to fitness issues and has only made one Premier League appearance.
The Anglo-Nigerian forward started his first game for Chelsea in their victory over AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the Carabao Cup and got his name on the scoresheet.
