Alozie gets a taste of her own medicine 28 days after red card incident with Lauren James
Published: September 04, 2023
Exactly four weeks after Nigeria's defeat on penalties to England at the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup, Super Falcons fullback Michelle Alozie got a taste of her own medicine after she was issued a straight red card during the firs half of Houston Dash's 1-0 loss to San Diego Wave in the NWSL on Monday morning.
In a moment of madness from the hugely talented Lauren James, the England sensation stepped on Alozie in the closing minutes of the second half, an action that led to her receiving a straight red card in a round of 16 clash of the Women's World Cup at Brisbane Stadium.
The Chelsea star, who was recently named the 2023 PFA Young Player of the Year, was initially shown a yellow card but it was upgraded to a red after a review from the video assistant referee.
Against San Diego Wave, Alozie was given a red card after a coming together with Rachel Hill near the halfway line but the referee deemed that the Houston Dash number 22 was denying a goalscoring opportunity when she fouled the midfielder.
It was Alozie's first red card in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and it came in her 29th career appearance in the division.
Before the trip to the Snapdragon Stadium, Alozie had a descent disciplinary record in the NWSL, having picked up five yellow cards across three seasons.
After going down to ten players, Houston Dash were put under pressure and conceded in the 57th minute when red-hot teenager Jaedyn Shaw slotted into the bottom corner.
