Why Adeleye should start ahead of Uzoho in 2023 AFCONQ against Sao Tome and Principe
Published: September 06, 2023
The conundrum regarding the goalkeeping situation of the Super Eagles continues to linger even with the return of Francis Uzoho.
The Cypriot-based goalkeeper missed Nigeria's 3-2 win over Sierra Leone due to suspension and was replaced by Adebayo Adeleye in the starting XI.
The 24-year-old should by default return to his place as the first-choice keeper but his unconvincing performances over the years have raised eyebrows and thus the call for him to be replaced.
Ahead of the tie against São Tomé and Príncipe, Peseiro would have to answer the question of whether to return Uzoho to the starting XI or retain Adeleye.
Uzoho has made 29 appearances for the Super Eagles which is more than enough to prove whether he deserves to be the undisputed number one goalkeeper.
Despite the ample time given to the Omonia Nicosia goaltender, he has failed to convince and should have his place threatened.
This is why Peseiro should retain Adeleye in the game against the São Tomé and Príncipe.
The Hapoel Jerusalem shot-stopper was neither spectacular nor blame-worthy against Sierra Leone and should be given a run of games to prove that he is fit to be the first-choice goalie.
It was the goalkeeping department that cost Nigeria at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and Peseiro must address the problem in that department before next year's edition of the tournament in Ivory Coast.
