Italy's new coach monitoring Tottenham Hotspur and Fiorentina Super Eagles-eligible fullbacks
Published: September 09, 2023
Italy's new coach Luciano Spalletti is monitoring two Super Eagles-eligible fullbacks with a view to handing them invitations to the senior national team.
Tottenham Hotspur left-back Destiny Udogie and Fiorentina right-back Michael Kayode are players of interest to the former Napoli boss.
The two young players are provisionally cap-tied to their country of birth Italy, having played in competitive matches for Gli Azzurrini but remain eligible to play for Nigeria through their parents.
Udogie was named on Italy U21s roster for their internationals this month but withdrew from the squad due to illness, paving the way for Kayode to receive his first call-up to Carmine Nunziata's team.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via Football Italia, Udogie and Kayode are on the radar of Spalletti ahead of Italy's 2024 European Championship qualifiers against Malta and England.
Udogie and Kayode will not be able to switch eligibility from Italy to Nigeria if they play more than three games at senior level for the four-time world champions before turning 21.
Kayode, 19, made his Serie A debut for Fiorentina in August while Udogie, 20, has broken into the Tottenham Hotspur first team having started each of their opening four games in the Premier League.
