'Fantastic club' - Hale End product Akpom says he's ready to show everyone what he can do at Ajax
Published: September 12, 2023
Arsenal's Hale End academy product Chuba Akpom has declared his readiness to impress with Ajax Amsterdam.
The English-born forward joined the Dutch giants in the summer transfer window from Middlesbrough, signing a five-year deal until June 30, 2028.
He was brought in by the Eredivisie side to bolster their attacking options and compete with Brian Brobbey.
The 27-year-old made his debut for the four-time European champions in their barren draw with Fortuna Sittard before the international break, coming on as a second-half substitute for Brobbey.
"I want to play and show everyone what I can do," Akpom said to Ajax Amsterdam's official website.
"It is a fantastic club with nice, friendly people. I feel very welcome here.
"My debut was fine. It was nice that I could get minutes, since I missed the preparation. Unfortunately we didn't win, but now we can continue to build."
The Super Eagles-eligible striker has disclosed that he has used the international break to visit his family in England, work on his fitness and has also declared his readiness to impress with Ajax.
"I had time to go to England and see my family. I also trained there myself to stay fit. I came back this week refreshed and ready for the season to resume. I'm really looking forward to next Sunday. I want to play and show everyone what I can do"
Akpom had a banner 2022-2023 campaign, scoring 28 goals in 38 matches to win the Championship Golden Boot award, PFA Championship Player's Player of the Year and EFL Championship Player of the Season.
He could make his first start on Sunday when the 36-time Dutch champions face FC Twente on matchday five in the Eredivisie.
