Nephew of ex-Super Eagles CB back in Chelsea training after debut for France U21s
Published: September 15, 2023
Lesley Ugochukwu, who is the nephew of ex-Super Eagles central defender Onyekachi Apam, is back at Cobham after international duty with France U21 national team.
The Rennes native made his debut for the French U21 national team in a friendly against Denmark on September 7 and four days later, he was also named in the starting lineup as the Little Blues defeated Slovenia in a European Championship qualifier.
Ugochukwu trained with his Chelsea teammates on Thursday as the squad stepped up their preparations for Sunday's visit to Bournemouth.
Two players ahead of the French-Nigerian teenager in Mauricio Pochettino's pecking order of holding midfielders, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, are not back with the group after starting both games played by Argentina and Chile respectively in the World Cup qualifiers.
With the South American duo yet to resume training with Chelsea as of yesterday, the chances of Ugochukwu being included in the traveling squad to the South Coast are high.
The Golden Boy nominee has received call-ups for all the matches played by the Blues in the new season but has been a bit-part player in the Premier League, having logged only eight minutes in the division.
Ugochukwu made 18 starts in the Ligue 1 during his time with Rennes and will be targeting making his full Premier League debut for his new employer in the coming weeks.
