Iwobi wins on his Fulham debut: Arsenal youth product breaks curse that started with Super Eagles
Published: September 16, 2023
By helping Fulham register a slender 1-0 win over Luton Town in his first appearance for the Cottagers, Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi managed to break a curse, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Saturday, September 16 marks the first time that the Arsenal-reared midfielder has won a game on his debuts for club and country since he turned professional.
In what was his first senior game, Iwobi suffered defeat as a Super Eagles team coached by legendary midfielder Sunday Oliseh were beaten 2-0 by Democratic Republic of Congo on October 8, 2015.
Nineteen days later, manager Arsene Wenger handed him his Arsenal debut in a 3-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the fourth round of the League Cup.
Iwobi did not fare better on his Everton debut as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, with Marco Silva in the Toffees dugout.
Three minutes after his introduction against Luton Town, Carlos Vinícius scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when he poached home from close range
Fulham's new number 22 came close to adding a second with seven minutes left on the clock but could not direct his shot on target after he was teed up by Bobby De Cordova-Reid.
Iwobi joined Fulham on deadline day for a fee of 22 million pounds and could have suffered defeat the following day but was ineligible to be named in the matchday squad to face Manchester City.
