Gift Orban ends 578-minute goal drought as Gent thrash Breidablik in UECL
Published: October 26, 20232023 Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban rediscovered his scoring touch on Thursday evening after finding the net during Gent's 5-0 rout of Breidablik Kópavogur on matchday three of the Europa Conference League, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Orban had gone nine matches in a row in all competitions without getting on the scoresheet before he slotted past goalkeeper Anton Ari Einarsson in the 69th minute to wrap up the scoring for Gent.
Before that strike, Orban's previous goal was in a 2-2 draw versus Sint-Truiden on August 20, when he scored in the 35th minute.
Overall, the 21-year-old was on the pitch for 578 minutes without scoring, comprising 331 minutes in the Jupiler Pro League, 149 minutes in the Europa Conference League qualifiers and 98 minutes in the group stage of the Europa Conference League.
Due to his mysterious dry spell in front of goal, Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro did not call him up for the October internationals against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique, and he was no longer a guaranteed starter at the Buffalo's.
Orban has now scored seven goals from sixteen appearances for Gent this campaign, including five goals in European competition.
Gent's other scorers against the Icelandic opponents were Omri Gandelman, Hugo Cuypers (2) and Tarik Tissoudali.
Undefeated after three games, Gent are topping Group B of the Europa Conference League with seven points, three more than Zorya.
