'A big compliment to the club' - Arteta delighted Nwaneri is heading to the Fifa U17 World Cup
Published: November 03, 2023
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was on media duties on Friday to preview his side's upcoming Premier League meeting with Newcastle United and one of the subjects he discussed was Ethan Nwaneri's inclusion in the Young Lions squad for the 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup.
Nwaneri has recovered in time from an undisclosed injury that kept him sidelined since September, paving the way for him to be named in manager Ryan Garry's 21-man squad for the tournament in Indonesia.
The attacking midfielder missed a total of six games in the Premier League 2, Bristol Street Motors Trophy and UEFA Youth League as a result of the injury.
In the six games that he played for Arsenal's youth teams before he suffered the injury, the first year scholar scored five goals and registered two assists.
Nwaneri was arguably England's top performer in the 2023 U17 Euro and U17 Euro qualifiers with eight goal involvements (7 goals, 1 assist) in eleven matches.
When asked to share his thoughts on Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly's inclusion in the England U17 squad, Arteta was quoted as saying by Arsenal's official webpage: "A big compliment to the club and to everyone in the academy who have raised the boys.
"They look really excited, it’s going to be an incredible experience for them, so we wish them all the best."
2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Super Eagles, Victor Moses was a key player for England at the 2007 Fifa U17 World Cup, scoring three goals for the Young Lions during the tournament won by the Golden Eaglets.
Tottenham Hotspur alum Timothy Eyoma was a member of the England squad that won the 2017 Fifa U17 World Cup.
