'I supported Chelsea' - Ajax striker Akpom reveals he was a Blues fan before he signed for Arsenal

Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom recently had a chat with Ajax TV to discuss a wide range of topics like his knowledge of the Dutch language and Dutch delicacies, footballers he idolized growing up and his favorite club of all time.

Akpom joined Ajax Amsterdam from Middlesbrough in August 2023, signing a five-year deal that will keep him in the Netherlands until June 2028 after both clubs reached an agreement for a transfer fee of €12.3 million, which could increase to €14.3 million through variables.

Akpom had a difficult first two months at Ajax Amsterdam, under former manager Maurice Steijn, but looked in good spirits during the interview with the club's media.

Ex-Ajax Director of Football Sven Mislintat, who was formerly Head of Recruitment at Premier League club Arsenal, recommended the signing of Akpom.

Akpom joined Arsenal at the age of six, rising through the ranks to make twelve first team appearances before a permanent departure in 2018 after taking in loan spells at Coventry City, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Sint-Truidense.

The Ajax Amsterdam striker has admitted that he used to support Chelsea before he was poached by the Gunners.

"My favorite team is got to be Arsenal, obviously I grew up there and I've played for Arsenal," Akpom told Ajax TV

On his favorite player, the Ajax number 10 answered: "I had two. Thierry Henry and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Before I signed for Arsenal I watched Chelsea a lot.

"I supported Chelsea so Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen I used to watch them, I used to love them a lot.

"Then I signed for Arsenal and obviously I started supporting Arsenal when I was 6 or 7 years old".

Akpom is enjoying a new lease of life under Ajax's new manager John van 't Schip, scoring three goals in 28 minutes of action in the Dutch Eredivisie.
