Two questions facing Peseiro ahead of Lesotho clash: Aina or Osayi-Samuel at RB; Lookman or Simon in LM?
Published: November 16, 2023The Super Eagles will get their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers underway later today against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
With an avalanche of choices at the disposal of coach José Peseiro, there are some decisions to make for the Portuguese tactician ahead of the clash and below are two of them
1. Who starts at right back? The Super Eagles have two good right full-backs at the moment in Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel and both have been in good form for their clubs.
Osayi-Samuel has 2 goals in nine games for Fenerbahçe in the Süper Lig while Aina has one goal and 1 assist for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this season.
However, it must be noted that Osayi-Samuel has failed to start only one game he was available for selection since he made his debut for the Super Eagles in a 4-0 loss to Portugal last year.
It will be interesting to see whether Peseiro sticks with the Fenerbahçe fullback or chooses the more experienced Aina.
2. Who gets the nod in left midfield: This is a straightforward battle between Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon.
Both forwards can be terrific to handle but can be inconsistent at the same time.
For instance, Simon looked great when he came on against Saudi Arabia but looked average when he started against Mozambique albeit scoring from the penalty spot in that encounter.
The same inconsistency can be found in Lookman's game who did well against São Tomé and Príncipe but couldn't replicate the same against Mozambique and Saudi Arabia.
The decision on who to choose between the Atalanta forward and the Nantes' number 27 is another one to look out for in today's game against the Crocodiles.
