'We had so many chances to finish the game' - PL star Nakamba reacts to Warriors draw against Super Eagles
Published: November 20, 2023English Premier League star and Zimbabwe captain, Marvelous Nakamba has reacted to the Warriors' 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles in a 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying match staged at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda on Sunday afternoon.
The Luton Town defensive midfielder reckons that Zimbabwe had many chances to win the game but didn't take them.
Nigeria found themselves a goal down in the 26th minute with Walter Musona giving Zimbabwe the lead with a long-range free-kick goal, but Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho restored parity at minute 67 with a well-taken left-footed strike.
Houston Dynamo defender Teenage Hadebe, Dynamos midfielder Tanaka Shandirwa and Mamelodi Sundowns star Divine Lunga missed clear-cut chances to win the game.
In an interview with the Zimbabwe Football Association after the game, Nakamba said: "We tried our best as a team, it went well on what we wanted to do and we got so many chances to finish the game. Unfortunately it didn't happen but we just have to keep on going and believe in ourselves.
"We are looking forward to the next match. We just have to stick together to encourage each other with the support that we are having from the fans, from everyone from Zimbabwe here. We like to say thank you very much, we keep on going.
"We have to make it as a team and we just have to push each other more and demand from each other more, it will happen.
"I was impressed with everyone who was in the camp, whether playing locally or abroad. The unity was there, everyone was supporting each other, every one was encouraging each other."
After two matches in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Zimbabwe are third in the standings with two points, same as Nigeria who are second because they have scored more goals.
The Super Eagles and the Warriors will meet again in the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
