2023 U17 World Cup: Two Nigeria-eligible players involved as Germany edge USA in five-goal thriller
Published: November 21, 2023Two Nigeria-eligible players were involved as European champions Germany defeated United States 3-2 in a round of 16 match at the ongoing 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup in Indonesia.
While VfL Wolfsburg U19 defender David Odogu played the entirety of the game for the German, his teammate and RB Leipzig midfielder Winners Osawe hopped off the bench in the 63rd minute.
A dream goal from a free-kick by Charles Herrmann in the 14th minute and Max Moerstedt's 34th minute effort sandwiched in between a strike from Taha Habroune saw Germany leading by a goal at the break.
David Vazquez again equalized for United States ten minutes from time but super-sub Bilal Yalcinkaya proved to be the match winner with a goal in the 87th minute.
Odogu has been involved in all the four matches contested by Germany at the 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup, while Osawe has played in three.
The two German-Nigerian players were in the Germany squad that won the European Championship in June 2023.
Following their win over United States, Germany set up a quarterfinal clash against Spain at the Jakarta International Stadium on Friday, November 24.
