Boniface ends 518-minute Bundesliga goal drought to help Bayer Leverkusen remain unbeaten
Published: December 03, 2023Victor Boniface saved Bayer Leverkusen from defeat at the BayArena on Sunday evening after netting a crucial equalizer in their 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
The Nigeria international was on a bad run of form in the Bundesliga alone before the visit of Borussia Dortmund, having failed to find the back of the net in five straight games since scoring against FC Cologne on October 8.
It was a super start for Borussia Dortmund as Julian Ryerson calmly slotted past goalkeeper Hradecky from close range to break the deadlock inside five minutes.
In the 36th minute, Boniface was presented with an opportunity to equalize for Die Werkself but the striker headed over the top after a pass from Florian Wirtz.
Bayer Leverkusen thought they had found an equalizer in first half stoppage time when Wirtz curled a strike in but the goal was chalked off after a VAR review as Boniface was offside in the build-up.
Eleven minutes from time, Boniface tapped into an empty net after the ball was put on a plate by substitute Patrik Schick.
It was his first goal in the German top flight in 518 minutes of game time spread across seven games and it helped Bayer Leverkusen remain unbeaten after thirteen matchdays.
Boniface has now scored 13 goals in all competitions since his summer move from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, comprising eight in the Bundesliga, four in the Europa League and one in the DFB Pokal.
