Fulham reveal exactly why Bassey was omitted from matchday squad against Newcastle United
Published: December 16, 2023
Fulham have revealed exactly why Calvin Bassey has not been named in the matchday squad for their ongoing game against Newcastle United at St James' Park,.
Manager Marco Silva has selected two Nigerian players in his starting lineup, with Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi deployed on the left flank and Tosin Adarabioyo in central defence in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Fulham revealed ahead of kickoff that Bassey was not available for selection due to illness.
Marco Silva added that the Nigeria international center back has not been feeling well the last few days and was not in the condition to be named in the traveling squad to Newcastle.
Bassey's absence this afternoon has ended a run of starting nine consecutive matches across all competitions for the Cottagers, games in which he was deployed as a central defender.
Issa Diop has taken the place of the Leicester City academy product in the starting lineup, with Antonee Robinson slotting in at left-back.
Fulham are aiming to make it three consecutive wins in the Premier League but have a mountain to climb following the dismissal of Raul Jimenez for smashing into Sean Longstaff midway through the first half.
The Cottagers registered back-to-back 5-0 wins over Nottingham Forest and West Ham United before their trip to Newcastle.
