'Premier League clubs were not interested' - Ex-Go Ahead Eagles defender criticises Ajax striker Akpom
Published: December 17, 2023
Former Go Ahead Eagles defender Johan Derksen has criticized Chuba Akpom, claiming that Premier League clubs did not show interest in signing the striker before his move to Ajax Amsterdam in the summer transfer window.
Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Everton had been linked with a move for the Arsenal academy product on the back of an outstanding season with Middlesbrough in which he scored 29 goals in 42 all-competition appearances.
The Super Eagles hopeful was also named the inaugural winner of the PFA Championship Players' Player of the Year Award.
Akpom struggled in his first two months as an Ajax Amsterdam player but has started showing his qualities as a goalscorer, coinciding with the appointment of John van 't Schip as coach.
In nine outings with John van 't Schip in the Ajax dugout, Akpom has mustered eight goals comprising three in the Europa League and five in the Eredivisie.
Johan Derksen has criticized Akpom despite the Ajax number 10 grabbing the headlines by scoring a brace in the 3-1 win over AEK Anthens on matchday six of the Europa League.
He is not convinced of Akpom after he missed some goalscoring opportunities in the win against the Greek club.
"That Ajax striker, if you have all those Premier League clubs in England... They were not interested in the top scorer of the second division," Derksen was quoted as saying by Ajax Fansite.
