'It's an ambition, a dream' - Super Eagles manager Peseiro reveals the team he wants to coach
Published: December 17, 2023
Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro has admitted that he dreams of returning to his homeland Portugal to coach Primeira Liga giants Benfica.
Having managed four of Portugal's so-called big five teams including Porto, Sporting CP, Sporting de Braga and Vitória Guimarães, Peseiro highlighted that he only needs to coach Benfica.
Peseiro has managed Sporting CP twice, was in the Porto dugout in the 2015-2016 season and has been coaching outside Portugal since 2020 with a spell in Venezuela before he was appointed Nigeria manager in 2022.
The 63-year-old comes off contract with the Nigeria Football Federation at the end of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and could find himself unemployed at the end of the tournament in Ivory Coast if he does not meet his target of at least reaching the semifinals of the AFCON.
Peseiro is one of the prime candidates linked with the vacant Zamalek coaching job after the sacking of Juan Carlos Osorio.
"Coach Benfica? There is ambition, but I don't see it as an easy thing to achieve at the moment," Peseiro said to the podcast Ontem já era tarde.
"I wouldn't feel right saying something like that... I've already coached four of the five best Portuguese clubs, Benfica is missing. But I don't see it as very clear, but anything can happen in football.
"It's an ambition, a dream that I have, but I don't position myself for it. There are people who take a stand and this doesn't look good when there is a coach at Benfica and at a time of upheaval - thankfully the president of Benfica came to clarify this very well, I congratulate Rui Costa. That's what you expect from a president of a big club".
Peseiro is expected to announce his squad for a pre-Africa Cup of Nations training camp in the coming days.
