Celtic hero believes red-hot Nigeria-eligible striker deserves an England call-up ahead of Euro 2024
Published: December 26, 2023
Celtic legend Chris Sutton has insisted that Bournemouth's Nigeria-eligible striker Dominic Solanke deserves to be called up to the England squad ahead of the 2024 European Championship.
Solanke has been in the international wilderness since earning his solitary England cap in a pre-World Cup friendly against Brazil at Wembley, where he came off the bench in the 75th minute to replace Jamie Vardy for his senior debut in November 2017.
The 26-year-old played for all of the youth teams of England's national teams and was the standout player as the Young Lions won the 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup, winning the Golden Ball award,
The Bournemouth number 9 is having a banner season, registering eleven goals in seventeen appearances in the Premier League, including a first career hat-trick in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.
Sutton has urged Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate to name Solanke in his squad for the 2024 European Championship as the striker has demonstrated his potential in the Premier League.
"No, it's absolutely not too late. Why should it be too late when you look at Solanke?"Sutton said on It's All Kicking Off, via The Daily Mail.
"Not just his goals, but his all-round performances this season. We know about Bowen, we know more about Watkins, but this has been a sort of bugbear of mine.
"Why not play players in big tournaments when they are flying, when they are in form?"
Basingstoke-born Solanke will become cap-tied to his country of birth if he makes his competitive debut for England at the European Championship.
