'Pulled off two really good saves' - Parkinson praises Arsenal loanee Okonkwo after 7th clean sheet
Published: December 26, 2023
Wrexham coach Phil Parkinson has praised Arsenal-owned goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo for his performance against Newport County in the Red Dragons' last outing in the League Two on December 23rd at STōK Cae Ras.
The Nigerian youngster was named in the starting lineup - his first appearance since November 28 - after recovering from a jaw injury that required a minor surgery.
Okonkwo, wearing a protective face mask, produced a number of brilliant saves to deny Newport County from getting on the score sheet.
In the 25th minute, he made a superb save to keep out Will Evans' effort and three minutes later, he spectacular tipped Seb Palmer-Houlden’s header from point-blank range onto the bar.
James Jones broke the deadlock in the 64th minute and Elliot Lee headed past the goalkeeper to double the advantage with three minutes to go.
Assessing the performance of Okonkwo post-match, Parkinson was quoted as saying by the Leader :"I thought Arthur was excellent.
"He pulled off two really good saves which are key moments in the game."
Okonkwo's clean sheet in the derby took his total for the season to seven, comprising six in the League Two and one in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
