'Scores goals because of AFCON' - Pundit goes hard on Osimhen for putting Super Eagles before Napoli
Published: January 06, 2024
Respected La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Mimmo Malfitano has questioned the loyalty of Victor Osimhen, stating the striker has put the Super Eagles before Napoli and he's only scoring goals because of the bonuses he stands to earns if he meets a number of targets.
Osimhen - the marquee player named in the Nigeria squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations - is currently with the national team at their training camp in Abu Dhabi before a friendly against Guinea.
Osimhen recently committed his future to reigning Italian champions Napoli after putting pen to paper on a new contract that will see him remain at the Diego Maradona Stadium until 2026
"Osimhen? People like him don't give a damn about the shirt. He is highlighting it several times: he goes on the pitch and scores goals because he trains in view of the Africa Cup of Nations and because he earns bonuses on the contract," Malfitano said on Tele A, during the program Fuorigioco, via Area Napoli.
Malfitano criticized Osimhen for not delaying his trip to link up with the Super Eagles in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
He added: "But he continually shows that he doesn't care about staying in Naples or contributing to the cause. In a moment of such a profound crisis for the team, his duty would have been to stay together with his teammates, go onto the pitch in Turin and try to turn things around and then leave".
Despite signing a contract extension, Osimhen has been heavily linked with a departure from Napoli at the end of the season, with Chelsea believed to be in pole position for his services.
The 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner has also been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United.
