Super Eagles coach Peseiro provides fitness update on Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho
Published: January 09, 2024
Super Eagles coach Jose Pesiero has provided a fitness update on Kelechi Iheanacho ahead of his side's opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations against Equatorial Guinea.
The 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner did not attend the pre-Africa Cup of Nations training camp in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates because he was undergoing rehabilitation due to an injury he suffered while on club duties at Leicester City.
Iheanacho's teammate at Leicester City, Wilfred Ndidi will take no part in the AFCON as he's expected to be out for three months after suffering a muscular injury, while Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface was forced to withdraw from the squad on Monday.
Peseiro has assured that Iheanacho will be in Côte d'Ivoire for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Asked to provide an update on Iheanacho after Monday's clash against Guinea, Peseiro said to Super Eagles Media Officer, Babafemi Raji: "Kelechi arrives in Côte d'Ivoire. He has finished the treatment now in Leicester City".
One of the most experienced players in the current Super Eagles squad with 50 appearances to his name, Iheanacho started every single game played by the national team at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 27-year-old is arguably the Super Eagles most influential player since the end of last season, having scored or assisted in each of his last five appearances for the national team and wore the captain's armband in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.
