Nigeria v Equatorial Guinea: Four key reasons Peseiro may consider sticking with Uzoho in goal

The Super Eagles will begin their quest for AFCON glory as they take on Equatorial Guinea in their first match on Sunday, 14th January.

However, there is still  a debate amongst fans and pundits alike about who should be the starting goalkeeper amidst Peseiro's decision to utilize Francis Uzoho in the World Cup qualifiers and international friendlies prior to the biennial tournament, owing to the fact that Nigerians may have apparently lost faith in the Omonia Nicosia goalie.

As Peseiro begins his quest to lift Africa's most prestigious football silverware, here are four key reasons why the Portuguese manager may favor 23-year-old Uzoho as his first-choice goalkeeper:

1. Dominant shot-Stopping ability

Despite his miscalculations, poor inability to read shot intensities and error-prone nature in recent outings, Uzoho has shown he possesses cat-like reflexes and the ability to pull off spectacular saves.

Quick reactions and strong hands allow him to routinely deny even well-struck shots from close range. These shot-stopping talents could give Peseiro's defense added confidence.

2. Proven track record on biggest stage

Being Nigeria's youngest-ever World Cup goalkeeper speaks volumes about Uzoho's mentality and maturity.

Just 19 during Russia 2018, Uzoho was unfazed by the pressure, conceding just three goals in three group stage matches against Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

Having passed a World Cup test so early in his career, Peseiro can have faith in Uzoho's nerve on the biggest of stages.

3. Distribution skills to spark attacks

In addition to keeping the ball out of his own net, Uzoho has shown an ability to get Nigeria on the front foot quickly.

Displaying accuracy and confidence with the ball at his feet, Uzoho is capable of swiftly releasing wide players to stretch matches.

He also poses a threat with his long kicks out of hand to catch opponents off guard.

4. High potential yet to be fulfilled

Despite being just 25-years-old, Uzoho has 29 caps for Nigeria already under his belt. Yet, his development was hampered by injuries.

Now nearing a return to his physical peak, Peseiro may recognize Uzoho's talents have not yet been fulfilled.

Handing Uzoho a consistent run between the sticks ahead of the AFCON could allow the young keeper to deliver on his immense potential.

With experience on the biggest stage at a young age, Uzoho is poised to continue as Peseiro's first-choice glovesman.
