Withdrawal from Super Eagles AFCON squad: Umar Sadiq gives his version of events
Published: January 19, 2024
Real Sociedad striker Umar Sadiq has released a statement clarifying his exit from the Super Eagles few days before the start of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 26-year-old was suspected to have picked up a knee injury in Nigeria's clash with Guinea which was the last friendly game before the start of AFCON.
Upon proper examination by the Nigerian medical team, a decision was reached that the lanky striker wouldn't be fit enough for AFCON and was replaced by Terem Moffi.
Not long after he left the camp, he was seen back in training with Real Sociedad and would participate in the Spanish side's victory over Osasuna in the round of 16 Copa del Rey which has created confusion about what transpired.
The Nigeria Football Federation Communication department had come out to state that the standard procedure was followed to conclude that Sadiq was unfit.
The former Almería striker has taken to social media to tell his side of the story which is in line with that of the NFF Communication department, but added that after he was assessed by Real Sociedad's medical team, it was discovered that he had suffered a bruise and not a knee injury.
He also added that he is committed to playing for Nigeria and not that he faked an injury to miss AFCON and congratulated his international teammates for their victory over Ivory Coast.
