2023 AFCON: Three Super Eagles players to watch out for against Guinea-Bissau
Published: January 21, 2024
The Super Eagles will clash with familiar foes Guinea-Bissau in their last group game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday evening.
They will be seeking to build on their victory against host nation Ivory Coast and head into the round of 16 with a huge tank of confidence with another triumph against the Djurtus.
Below are three Nigerian players to watch out for in their encounter against their West African counterparts:
1. Victor Osimhen: Undoubtedly, the reigning CAF Men's Player of the Year hasn't been at his clinical best, missing 3 big chances so far in the tournament, the most in the Nigerian squad.
However, he has still been Super Eagles' most decisive player having scored the only goal against Equatorial Guinea and won the penalty that handed the three-time African champions the victory over Ivory Coast.
The Napoli star must be licking his lips ahead of the encounter with the Guinea-Bissau defense who have conceded 6 goals already and hopefully, he can regain his impressive goalscoring form.
2. Ademola Lookman: The Atalanta forward is in his best form for the Super Eagles, looking likely in two opening two games, and has one assist to his name.
Playing mainly from the left side of the attack, the former Everton forward has proven to be a handful for opposition defenses having recorded 5 key passes, one big chance, and fouled 6 times so far.
He is another player Baciro Candé will be telling his charges to keep a close eye on in the game.
3. Ola Aina: The Nottingham Forest fullback has been preferred to Bright Osayi-Samuel and has repaid José Peseiro's faith in him.
He did well in the opening game against Equatorial Guinea, winning 5 of his seven ground duels, coming on top in the two aerial duels he contested, wasn't dribbled past, and created one key pass.
The Cobham product was also in stellar form against the Elephants, winning 5 of his nine ground duels, making 2 clearances, 1 block, and yet again wasn't dribbled past.
His long throw also led to a big chance for Victor Osimhen against Ivory Coast which the latter couldn't convert and it won't be surprising to see Peseiro's side use his long throws to create chances in tomorrow's game and future ones.
