FA Youth Cup: Red-hot winger George on target as Chelsea side coached by Nigerian beat Everton
Published: January 21, 2024
Chelsea have advanced into the fifth round of the prestigious FA Youth Cup after defeating Everton 2-0 in a fourth round clash staged at Walton Hall Park on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea U18s' Nigerian football tactician Hassan Sulaiman handed a start to red-hot winger of Nigerian descent Tyrique George while another player with a Nigerian background in Somto Boniface started on the bench.
After seven minutes, George was not far away from opening the scoring with a lovely effort that rattled against the crossbar.
Chelsea were down to ten men eight minutes into the game as Kaiden Wilson was shown a straight red card for clipping George Morgan who was racing through on goal.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, it was the Londoners that took the lead at minute 21 when Donnell McNeilly curled the ball into the far corner after he was fed by Ishé Samuels-Smith.
Just past the hour mark, George doubled the advantage with a shot that went in off both posts to make the task more difficult for Everton.
With the exception of the EFL Trophy, George has scored in all the competitions he has played in 2023-2024 including the U18 Premier League, U18 Premier League Cup, FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2, Premier League International Cup and Premier League Cup.
Three of the thirteen goals he has scored this season have been nominated for Chelsea's Goal of the Month.
George was withdrawn in the 82nd minute and was replaced by Chelsea's Academy Scholar of the Year for the 2022-2023 season, Boniface.
