'They hate each other' - Ex-DR Congo captain gives his perspective on Nigeria v Cameroon AFCON clash
Published: January 25, 2024Former Democratic Republic of Congo captain Gabriel Zakuani has predicted that the Nigeria versus Cameroon 2023 Africa Cup of Nations match will be a feisty encounter.
While the Super Eagles finished second in Group A with seven points from a possible nine, the Indomitable Lions managed to squeeze through to the last 16 after scoring two late goals in a 3-2 win over the Gambia.
Nigeria have not looked comfortable at the 2023 AFCON because of a sudden change to their playing philosophy, with manager Jose Peseiro setting up his team in a defensive formation in the last two group games.
Looking at the head to head records between Nigeria and Cameroon, the Super Eagles have been the dominant force, having won 12 games, drawn eight and lost five, but three of those defeats were in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, 1988 and 2000.
Gabriel Zakuani has pointed out that fans are yet to see the best of Nigeria's marquee center forward Victor Osimhen and hopes the reigning African Footballer of the Year can set the tournament alight against the Indomitable Lions.
"Nigeria against Cameroon stands out for me," Zakuani said on the BBC World Service.
"They actually hate each other, it will be great to see some challenges flying in that one. Just to see Osimhen if he starts producing the goals. He's getting the chances but not the goals.
"I'd like to see him light up that one because he will be looking forward to that one."
Osimhen has scored once at the 2023 AFCON and won a penalty converted by William Troost-Ekong in the hard-fought victory against hosts Ivory Coast.
