'It's going to be difficult' - Troost-Ekong admits Peseiro faces selection dilemma over who to start v Angola
Published: January 30, 2024
Speaking to reporters at the end of the Super Eagles' recovery session at the Ecole Nationale de la Police on Monday, assistant captain William Troost-Ekong admitted that manager Jose Peseiro faces a selection dilemma for the quarterfinal clash against Angola.
Of the twenty-five players Peseiro named in his 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad, five have not played a single minute including
Olorunleke Ojo, Ahmed Musa, Terem Moffi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Bruno Onyemaechi.
In the event Stanley Nwabali fails to recover for Friday's game, Peseiro has to figure out who to start in goal between Uzoho and Ojo, though the former is number two in the pecking order of goalkeepers at the AFCON.
The Portuguese football tactician will also have to contemplate whether to hand starting berths to Zaidu Sanusi, Samuel Chukwueze, Alhassan Yusuf and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Troost-Ekong is aware that the Super Eagles have to be at their best to beat a creative Angola side who have scored nine goals in four matches at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and kept back-to-back clean sheets.
"We are preparing for the game the same way as we prepare for every game so far this tournament. Angola looks like a very good team, we are going to have to play our best football to try and beat them," Troost-Ekong.
"We are working very hard, you can see it today in the training, everyone is trying to do the maximum and it's going to be difficult for the coach to select who is going to play.
"From here we are going to be very focused for the game on Friday."
Troost-Ekong should resume training on Tuesday after he was excused from the Super Eagles recovery session yesterday.
