Super Eagles striker back in group training at Nottingham Forest ahead of PL clash against Arsenal
Published: January 30, 2024Nottingham Forest welcomed Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi back into group training ahead of their Premier League clash against Arsenal at the City Ground.
Awoniyi has not figured for the two-time European champions since undergoing groin surgery after aggravating an injury during Nigeria's 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho.
The 26-year-old has been unavailable for selection for twelve consecutive matches in all competitions due to the ailment.
But there could be light at the end of the tunnel for Awoniyi as he has trained twice with his Nottingham Forest teammates before tonight's clash against the Gunners.
Taking into account that the Nigerian has had only two full training sessions, the game against Arsenal may come too soon for him.
Awoniyi was Forest's key man before his spell on the sidelines, having registered six goal involvements in ten Premier League appearances.
Providing a squad update, Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo told reporters at the pre-match press conference: "Taiwo, Anthony and Felipe are back with the group.
"Taiwo is in the process of recovering and getting the fitness levels right. It was our decision to bring them to the group instead of waiting for them to be one hundred percent ready.
"Anthony made two training sessions and Taiwo the same. It was our decision to have them around and start being with the boys."
Awoniyi's fitness issues kept him out of the Super Eagles squad for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
