Who could star in Nigeria v Angola? Three Super Eagles players to watch out for in AFCON showdown

The Super Eagles will be seeking to book their place in the semifinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations when they face Angola tomorrow evening.

Since being held to a 1-1 draw in the opening game, the three-time African champions have looked impeccable, particularly in defense, conceding just one goal so far.

Below are the three Nigerian players to watch out for in the game against the Palancas Negras.

1. William Troost-Ekong:  The 30-year-old has led the defense admirably, playing as the sweeper in José Peseiro's 3-man defense, and has missed just one game since the start of the tournament and that was as a result of injury.

Ekong's reading of the game has been superb, making 1.3 interceptions per game which is only bettered by Frank Onyeka and his 4.3 clearances per game is the most in the team.

The veteran center-back will have no small role to play in stopping a rapid Angolan attack.

2. Calvin Bassey: The Fulham defender hasn't missed a single minute since starting the second game against Ivory Coast and has barely put a foot wrong.

He has been unbelievable when playing on the left side of the 3-man central defensive line and has put in a good shift when played as a left wing-back.

His front-footed style is unmatched, averaging 3.5 tackles per game, the highest in the side, and his 0.5 blocks per game is the joint-best.

Bassey will be needed to silence the Angola attack particularly Gelson Dala who has been one of the tournament's best forwards and is likely to face.

3. Ola Aina: The Nottingham Forest fullback is one of the five players that has started all Super Eagles games and it is safe to say that he has established himself as the first-choice right back with his performances.

He ranks joint third for most tackles per game, and joint fourth for most interceptions, with only Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, and Semi Ajayi averaging more clearances per game.

Pesero will be hoping that the Cobham product continues his excellent form against the Black Sable antelopes.
