Onyeka reveals how Osimhen exposed Napoli teammate Anguissa before Nigeria's win against Cameroon
Published: February 01, 2024
Frank Onyeka has revealed that Victor Osimhen gave the Super Eagles holding midfielders the lowdown on his Napoli teammate André-Frank Zambo Anguissa before Nigeria's win over Cameroon in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
One of the key battles that had an impact on the outcome of the meeting saw Onyeka involved in an individual duel with the Indomitable Lions captain, with the Nigeria number 8 coming out on top.
Onyeka has impressed at the Africa Cup of Nations, showing what he's made of in midfield by breaking up play, pressing the opponents and has been popping up in attacking positions when the need arises.
His performance is more impressive when you consider the fact that manager Jose Peseiro has asked him to play as a number 6 or holding midfielder, a role he has played sparingly in the last three years as he is often deployed as an advanced number 8 at club level.
Asked if Osimhen told him one or two things about Anguissa, Onyeka said to The Hindsight Podcast : "Osimhen told me that he likes to play short, short passes, tries to connect.
"He doesn't play long so when he gets the ball I try to close him as much as possible even Alex because we know that he doesn't turn, doesn't play long passes He only tries to connect with the strikers with short passes."
Onyeka added: "It has been good, I try to do my job as much as I can so I guess it's working well so far. I'm really, really glad."
FC Ebedei product Onyeka is one of five players to have started all the four matches played by the Super Eagles at the 2023 AFCON, the others being Stanley Nwabali, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina and Victor Osimhen.
