Super Eagles confirmed team news: Peseiro reveals Nwabali will start against Angola but on one condition
Published: February 01, 2024
Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro was on media duties on Thursday to preview his side's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash with Angola and one of the topics he touched on was the availability of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Super Eagles fans had their heart in their mouth during the second half of the 2-0 win over the Indomitable Lions as Nwabali was stretchered off the pitch after coming off worse in a collision with a Cameroon player.
Things were not looking good when the Super Eagles held their recovery session on Monday as he was spotted limping, fueling speculation that he was doubtful to take to the pitch against the Palancas Negras.
The tests carried out on Nwabali by the Super Eagles medical team confirmed that he suffered a mild ligament injury.
Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported on Wednesday that Nwabali has gotten the medical green light to face Angola and Peseiro will observe his players one more time on Thursday before making a final decision on the eleven players to start the quarterfinal match against the Palancas Negras.
The Portuguese football tactician has confirmed as much, stating that Nwabaili will be in goal on Friday, provided that he comes through today's final workout unscathed.
"Today we are going to take a final decision. He's going to do the last test but if he cannot play, I play with Francis (Uzoho). I have confidence in both of them and Ojo also," Peseiro told reporters.
Statistically, Nwabali is the best goalkeeper at the ongoing AFCON; he has posted three consecutive clean sheets, has a clean sheet percentage of 75 percent and conceded 0.26 goals per ninety.
