Nwabali wins CAF's Save of the Day, Super Eagles GK says he needs to make a save for the country
Published: February 03, 2024Stanley Nwabali's incredible stop in the 89th minute of the Super Eagles' slim win over Angola in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has been named the CAF Save of the Day.
With one minute left on the clock, Zito Luvumbo found himself facing the Nigerian back line after receiving a pass from Mabululu, drifted the ball to his left foot, and aimed to curl the ball into the top corner but Nwabali parried the ball away.
The Chippa United gloveman also made a fantastic save in the 4th minute to deny Mabululu from putting Angola ahead in the encounter.
Reacting to his early save against the Angolans, Nwabali told reporters in the mixed zone: "It's a team game, you must help your team, your team need to help you so making a save, how would I put it, that's why I'm there. I need to make a save for the country."
Since making his competitive debut against Equatorial Guinea, the 27-year-old is yet to put a foot wrong and the sight of him being stretchered off against Cameroon put a lot of Nigerians' hearts in their mouths.
He has conceded just once and has recorded four clean sheets, the most in the tournament and that has also helped him equal a long-standing record for most clean sheets by a Nigerian goalkeeper in a major tourney.
Undoubtedly, Nwabali has restored normalcy to the Super Eagles goalkeeping department based on his performances so far at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
