2023 AFCON: Bafana Bafana beat Blue Sharks to set up semifinal meeting with Super Eagles
Published: February 04, 2024
Rivalry is set to be rekindled as the Super Eagles will face South Africa in the semifinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday evening.
The Bafana Bafana cemented their place in the last four for the first time since the 2000 edition of the tournament having beaten the Blue Sharks 2-1 on penalties on Saturday night at Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro.
They started the competition slowly, losing their first game to Mali who had earlier been knocked out by Ivory Coast but have grown in form since then, scoring 6 goals and conceding none.
South Africa were responsible for the ouster of Morocco, one of the tournament's favorites, beating the North African side in the round of 16 which should serve as a warning to the Super Eagles.
The three-time African champions had earlier beaten Angola on Friday evening to become the first team to book their spot in the last four and remain the only unbeaten side left, alongside surprise package DR Congo.
Both sides last met at AFCON in 2019 when the Super Eagles were 2-1 victors with Bafana Bafana hoping to have their pound of flesh this time around.
