'We have a good defence' - Bafana Bafana star Mashego warns Osimhen, Super Eagles teammates
Published: February 05, 2024
South Africa are through to their first Africa Cup of Nations semifinals in 24 years after beating Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties in an incredible tight contest with very few chances in regulation and extra time.
Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero for the South Africans, saving four penalties to send his side through to the final four.
One of the ten Mamelodi Sundowns players in the Bafana Bafana squad, Terrence Mashego made his AFCON debut with six minutes left on the clock, replacing Thapelo Maseko.
Mashego was still absorbing the win when he was asked to share his thoughts on the upcoming semifinal clash against Nigeria and he acknowledged that the Super Eagles are not the easiest opponents.
Bafana Bafana caused the biggest upset at the 2023 AFCON, beating pre-tournament favorites Morocco 2-0 and held Tunisia to a goalless draw.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone, Mashego said: "It's going to be a difficult game. You know Nigeria they have a good squad but also on our side we also have a good squad so it's going to be a very good game."
When asked about the prospect of facing reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, he answered: "We also have a good defence, now we've gone three games without conceding so we have a very good defence, we are ready for any battle.
"We don't want to pressurize ourselves, we just have to take one game at a time and also maybe we might find ourselves in the final."
South Africa coach Hugo Broos is sweating on the fitness of Thapelo Maseko ahead of the semifinal clash against Nigeria.
