Chelsea-reared fullback among three Super Eagles stars in CAF Best XI for 2023 AFCON
Published: February 14, 2024
The Confederation of African Football Technical Study Group has released the Best XI for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, with three Super Eagles stars making the cut.
Chelsea-reared fullback Ola Aina has been selected in the Team of the Tournament along with Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong and another dual national player, Ademola Lookman.
Champions Ivory Coast have also contributed three players to Best XI namely Ghislan Konan, Jean Michael Seri and Franck Kessie, while bronze medalists South Africa are represented by two players in the shape of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena
Completing the Best XI are: Yoane Wissa and Chancel Mbemba (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Emilio Nsue (Equatorial Guinea).
Aina and Troost-Ekong have been picked in the Best XI after helping Nigeria keep four consecutive clean sheets at the AFCON and were seconds away from making it five in a row but Mokoena had other ideas, with the Bafana Bafana star scoring from the spot right at the death in the semifinal clash a week ago.
With the exception of the group game against Guinea-Bissau, Troost-Ekong went the distance in all the matches played by the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was on the score sheet on three occasions, a feat that earned him the Best Player award.
The skillful Aina impressed with his versatility at the Africa Cup of Nations and the one blot in his copybook was a poor performance in the final, where he was involved in an individual duel with Brighton & Hove's Elephants winger Simon Adingra.
The Nottingham Forest defender started all the games contested by Nigeria at the AFCON, seven in total, and was cautioned twice.
