PL International Cup: Lagos-born defender shines for PSV in win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
Published: February 15, 2024
Lagos-born defender Emmanuel van de Blaak was impressive for PSV U21s in their 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the quarterfinal of the Premier League International Cup played on Thursday night at Stamford Bridge.
Ronnie Stutter gave the home side the lead in the 31st minute with the young England international taking a deft touch to beat his marker before slamming the ball home.
Ten minutes before the break, Mohamed Nassoh drew level for the away side, as Chelsea failed to deal with the danger that came their way.
The 21-year-old midfielder would give PSV the lead from the penalty spot to score his second of the night and the goal that gave the Dutch side the victory.
It was not a surprise to see Van de Blaak feature in the game as he has been a regular all season, starting 22 of the previous 24 appearances he has made before today.
The Dutch-Nigerian defender is mainly a center-back but can play as a right-back, which is the position he played against Chelsea tonight.
The 19-year-old wasn't the only Nigeria-eligible player who featured in the fixture, with winger Tyrique George also coming on as a substitute for the young Blues.
Victory for PSV means Chelsea are out of this season's Premier League International Cup.
