Nigeria's 2023 AFCON star Lookman to miss Atalanta's clash against Sassuolo after spraining ankle
Published: February 16, 2024
Ademola Lookman is reportedly not in contention to take to the pitch on Saturday night when Atalanta face U.S. Sassuolo at the Gewiss Stadium - a game corresponding to the 25th round of matches in the Italian top-flight.
Lookman, one of the standout players for the Super Eagles at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, returned to Italy on Wednesday after representing Nigeria at the tournament in Ivory Coast.
According to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, Lookman suffered a sprained left ankle which was only highlighted on his return to the Bortolotti Center in Zingonia .
The Super Eagles star underwent treatment on Thursday and will certainly watch the match against Sassuolo from the stands.
If his recovery goes according to plan, a two-week layoff could see him return to action against AC Milan on February 25 or Inter Milan on February 28.
Atalanta have done well without Lookman, having registered six wins in all competitions and drew once in the Serie A while the striker was away on international duty.
The 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup winner enhanced his reputation at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, registering three goals and one assist as Nigeria qualified for the final, where they were beaten 2-1 by hosts Ivory Coast.
