'I'm sure he would do well' - Peseiro backs legendary Portuguese coach Mourinho for Barcelona job
Published: February 19, 2024Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has expressed his desire to see his friend and compatriot Jose Mourinho manage Barcelona and believes the latter be a success at the club.
The managerial position at the Catalonia-based side is set to become vacant as a result of the decision of their current boss Xavi Hernandez to leave at the end of the season.
Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, Italian coach Thiago Motta, former Germany gaffer Hansi Flick, and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel are among a host of names to have been linked with the vacant position.
Besides the aforementioned names, Peseiro believes Mourinho will also be a good fit for the 27-time Spanish champions.
The 63-year-old during an interview with Spanish sports daily Sport revealed why he would like to see the former Chelsea manager at the helm of affairs of Barcelona.
"I'm Portuguese, a good friend of Mourinho... I like Mou. We were together at university, we met many times to talk about football. He gave me tickets when I was at Barcelona," Peseiro said.
"When Queiroz called me to go to Madrid, the first one I called was Mourinho, not my wife. Of course, I also like Guardiola, his fantasy.
"They are different in their way of winning, but they win. I would like Mourinho to go to coach Barça, he has to be in a team to win everything, because he is a winner."
When quizzed about whether Mourinho would be suitable as the Blaugrana manager having previously served as the coach of their arch-rival Real Madrid, he replied: "What is the problem? In the end it is training. I'm sure he would do well because of the demands he places on everything and everyone around him day after day, every minute, to build a team to win."
The duo are long-term friends with the former Roma gaffer confirming that Peseiro could be regarded as his closest friend in football in an interview he granted before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.
