New goalkeeping rival for Otega Ekperuoh as Chelsea loan out Bergstrom to IF Brommapojkarna
Published: February 29, 2024Dual national youngster Otega Ekperuoh has a new goalkeeping rival at IF Brommapojkarna ahead of the forthcoming Allsvenskan season.
With a statement on their official website, Chelsea announced on Thursday that Finland international Lucas Bergström signed a new contract keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2025 and has been loaned out to Swedish top-flight club IF Brommapojkarna until January 1, 2025.
The temporary acquisition of Bergström could see Swedish-Nigerian glovesman Ekperuoh fall down the pecking order of goalkeepers at IF Brommapojkarna.
Last season, Ekperuoh was third choice goalkeeper, behind Filip Sidklev and Lucas Hägg Johansson, and was called up for six first team games but was a non-playing substitute on each occasion.
The 19-year-old signed a first team contact with IF Brommapojkarna in July 2022 before heading on loan to Division 2 club Enskede IK for the remainder of the season to get a taste of senior football.
Ekperuoh joined IF Brommapojkarna in 2016, rising through the youth team ranks before he was promoted to the first team.
He has received several national team call ups for the Sweden-eligible players born in 2004.
Chelsea signed Lucas Bergstrom from Turun Palloseura during the 2018-2019 season and have included him in the matchday squad for first team games on 25 occasions.
