Solanke snubbed in latest England squad: Should NFF make a move for Bournemouth hotshot?
Published: March 14, 2024
Gareth Southgate's recent England squad selection for the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium has sparked debate, with one notable omission raising eyebrows: Dominic Solanke.
The Bournemouth striker has been on fire this season registering fifteen goals and three assists in twenty-eight league appearances so far this season, but still finds himself left out in the cold.
This begs the question: should the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) make a move to tempt Solanke to switch allegiances and represent the Super Eagles?
Solanke's exclusion has come as a huge surprise as the 26-year-old has been in excellent form, leading the line for a Bournemouth side currently in the Premier League and pushing for a strong finish.
His goalscoring record is impressive, and his absence from the England squad has left some fans scratching their heads.
Joe Cole, a former England international and TNT Sports Pundit, has even suggested that Solanke should be "in the hat" for selection for the upcoming Euros.
Southgate's reasoning for omitting Solanke remains unclear. Perhaps he has other plans for the striker position, favoring other prodigious names like Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney.
Or maybe he wants to see Solanke maintain his hot streak before awarding a future call-up. Whatever the reason, Solanke's current form suggests he deserves consideration for the England squad.
This is where the NFF sees an opportunity. Solanke was born in England to a Nigerian father and an English mother, making him eligible to represent both nations.
With his goalscoring record and current form, he would be a valuable addition to the Nigerian squad.
The Super Eagles are known for their pace and trickery on the flanks accompanied by an array of fantastic marksmen, but often lack squad dynamism in play.
Solanke could provide a more dynamic option up front whilst also being able to act as an attacking focal point and a reliable source of goals.
Of course, there are challenges to consider. Solanke has clearly set his sights on representing England, and a switch of allegiance would likely see him labeled a turncoat by some England fans.
However, the lure of international football and the chance at quality playing time at international level for a nation with a rich footballing tradition could be very appealing.
The NFF needs to tread carefully. They should approach Solanke with a clear plan and vision for his role in the national team.
Highlighting the excitement surrounding the Nigerian team, the passionate fanbase, and the opportunity to be a hero for his heritage could be persuasive factors.
Ultimately, the decision rests with Solanke. He has a difficult choice to make. Nonetheless, his excellent form makes him a player the Super Eagles of Nigeria would be lucky to have.
This England squad omission could be the nudge Solanke needs to explore his Nigerian heritage and potentially write a new chapter in his international career.
