Done deal: Arsenal loan out Nigerian goalkeeper until the end of the 2023-2024 season
Published: March 18, 2024
Through a statement on their official website, Premier League side Arsenal have announced that promising Nigerian goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo has been loaned out to Isthmian Premier League side Cheshunt on a work experience loan, subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
Brian, the younger brother of Arthur Okonkwo who is on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation with a view to a possible call-up to the Super Eagles, will be spending the remainder of the 2023-2024 season at the non-leaguers.
The 18-year-old previously spent time on loan at Hitchin Town and was at another non-league club Leatherhead for a portion of this season.
As part of the work experience loan agreement between the Gunners and Ambers, Okonkwo will continue training with Arsenal's youth team and then join Cheshunt ahead of their matchdays.
He has been on the books of Arsenal since 2018, joining them as a schoolboy, and rose through the ranks to sign a scholarship with the north London club in the summer of 2022.
Brian Okonkwo actually started his football career as a striker before he was converted into a goalkeeper.
The second year scholar was poached by the Gunners after he was scouted while playing for his Sunday team, Pro Touch.
This season, Okonkwo has played in three matches for the Gunners in the U18 Premier League and conceded six goals.
