Arsenal-owned Nigerian goalkeeper Okonkwo keeps clean sheet on Non-League Day
Published: March 25, 2024
Less than a week after his loan move to Cheshunt on a work experience was confirmed, Arsenal's teenage Nigerian goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo kept his first clean sheet for the Isthmian Premier League side.
The 18-year-old made his competitive debut for the Ambers in a five-goal thriller against Folkestone Invicta at Theobalds Lane on Tuesday, March 19, conceding two goals in a 3-2 win.
Okonkwo retained his place in the starting lineup for the Non-League Day fixture against Carshalton Athletic F.C. at Theobalds Lane on Saturday.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers schoolboy Nathaniel Orafu opened the scoring with a great strike from outside the box with four minutes left in the first half, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal in the process.
Seven minutes into the second half, Okonkwo made a great save to deny Saunder Henry from restoring parity.
Brian, younger brother of Arsenal loanee Arthur Okonkwo who is on the radar of Nigeria Football Federation, previously spent time on loan at Hitchin Town and Leatherhead.
The promising teenager is expected to train with his Arsenal teammates on Monday and will link up with Cheshunt ahead of their league clash against Margate.
Having won four of their last five matches in the Isthmian Premier League, Cheshunt have moved ten points clear of danger.
