Ajax Amsterdam considering move for Aston Villa's Super Eagles-eligible midfielder
Published: March 26, 2024
Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam are considering the possibility of signing England U20 international of Nigerian descent Tim Iroegbunam.
Football Insider claims the Aston Villa midfielder is on a shortlist of possible reinforcements for the summer transfer window.
Iroegbunam might have put himself in the shop window following his impressive display in the two-legged Europa Conference League encounter earlier this month, starring as Aston Villa thrashed the four-time European champions 4-0 on aggregate.
He followed that up by scoring and providing an assist for the Young Lions as the Men's Elite Squad beat Poland 5-1 in an U20 League fixture on March 22, 2024.
Having recovered from an injury that kept him out of England U20s 2023 Fifa U20 World Cup squad, Iroegbunam has struggled for game time upon his return to Aston Villa after a season-long loan spell at Queens Park Rangers.
He has appeared in eight matches in all competitions for Aston Villa this term, but only one was from the off.
It has been suggested that Aston Villa may consider selling the homegrown player to comply with the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).
In March 2022, he signed a contract extension until the end of the 2026-2027 season.
Iroegbunam has the ability to play as a holding midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder and joined Aston Villa from West Brom in 2021.
