Nwaneri continues scoring streak for Young Lions, Arsenal teammate Obi-Martin nets in Denmark's big win
Published: March 27, 2024
Arsenal starlets Ethan Nwaneri and Chidozie Obi-Martin found the net on Tuesday as their respective nations qualified for the 2024 European U17 Championship, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Nwaneri was in brilliant form during the last international break of the season, netting in three consecutive matches for the Young Lions.
The attacking midfielder, who recently celebrated his 17th birthday, was on target against Northern Ireland (March 20) and Hungary (March 23)before yesterday's meeting against France at St George's Park.
With England playing with ten men following the dismissal of captain Chris Rigg, France exploited their numerical advantage and were 2-0 up at the interval thanks to a brace from their number 9 Messi Tanfouri.
Twenty minutes from time, Nwaneri pulled one back when he controlled the ball with his chest before finding the bottom corner with a left-footed finish.
In doing so, the Hale End Academy graduate took his tally to twelve for England's U17 national teams after 24 appearances for the age group , an average of a goal every two games.
Elsewhere in the U17 Euro elite qualifying round, Chidozie Obi-Martin helped Denmark register a convincing 7-0 win against Georgia at Ramaz Shengelia Stadium Kutaisi.
The talented center forward broke the deadlock at the midway point of the first half after he was teed up by Silkeborg fullback Simon Stüker.
Obi-Martin now has nine goals in thirteen appearances at Denmark at U17 level.
Sixteen teams will participate in the 2024 European U17 Championship, which will be held in Cyprus from May 18 to June 5 this year.
