Lagos-born midfielder who is pals with Alex Iwobi makes Premier League debut against Tottenham
Published: March 30, 2024Versatile Lagos-born midfielder Fred Onyedinma made his Premier League debut for Luton Town in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.
Onyedinma was not in contention to play his first game in the English top-flight until now because he was farmed out on loan to Championship outfit Rotherham United for the first half of the 2023-2024 season.
In the January transfer window, the Millers and Hatters mutually agreed to end his season-long loan spell before the expiration of the deal.
In what was his first squad involvement for a Premier League game, Onyedinma was brought on as a replacement for the injured Tahith Chong with sixteen minutes remaining.
The Nigerian-born player had not received a call-up for a Luton Town first team game since the playoff final in May before the Hatters visited the English capital.
Onyedinma is pals with Nigeria international Alex Iwobi, having played on the same team, Blackheath District with the Fulham midfielder in his formative years as a footballer.
The 27-year-old offers versatility as he is capable of playing as a winger, right midfielder, left midfielder and makeshift wing-back.
An own goal from Issa Kaboré canceled out Chong's early opener before Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min netted the game-winning goal at minute 86.
Onyedinma has now made 52 appearances in total for Luton Town since his arrival at Kenilworth Road in the summer of 2021.
