Nuno Espírito Santo's return to former club: Taiwo Awoniyi will not be involved against Tottenham
Published: April 05, 2024On Sunday, April 7, Portuguese football tactician Nuno Espírito Santo returns to his former club Tottenham Hotspur, whom he coached for five months during the 2021-2022 season.
Providing an injury update on Taiwo Awoniyi, Nuno Espírito Santo confirmed that the Nigeria international is not in contention to be named in the traveling squad to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Awoniyi suffered an injury before the trip to Luton Town and was forced to withdraw from the Nigeria squad for a pair of internationals against Ghana and Mali last month.
New Zealand striker Chris Wood has played a significant role in the absence of Taiwo, scoring in three consecutive matches in the Premier League, with Nottingham Forest undefeated in all games where he found the net.
Nuno Espírito Santo did not put a timeframe on Awoniyi's return to fitness but he's optimistic that the Super Eagles star will make his comeback at some point this season.
"We still don't have the exact moment that he's going to return, still treating himself," he told reporters at the pre-match press conference.
Before his return to the treatment room, Awoniyi netted six goals in seventeen Premier League matches while producing three assists.
Nottingham Forest are out of the relegation zone despite being deducted four points for breaching the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.
