2019 Golden Eaglets invitee Akande battles Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle starlets for PL award
Published: May 02, 2024
2019 Golden Eaglets invitee Adrian Akande has been recognized for his outstanding performances in April, with the Premier League nominating the Reading forward for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award.
Akande participated in four matches in the Premier League 2 last month and showed off the creative side of his game by registering three assists, helping the Royals remain unbeaten with two wins and two draws.
He provided assists in games against Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove and Manchester City, all of which he started.
in his bid to win the award for the first time in his career, Akande faces competition from Arsenal's Amario Cozier-Duberry, Tottenham Hotspur's Rio Kyerematen and Will Lankshear, and Chelsea's Dujuan Richards.
Other nominees for the monthly accolade are: Nottingham Forest duo Jack Thompson and Aaron Bott, and Newcastle United's Alfie Harrison.
This season, Akande has caught the eye in the Premier League 2, registering ten goal involvements (3 goals, 7 assists) in fourteen appearances.
The 20-year-old was named in Nigeria's squad for the 2019 Africa U17 Cup of Nations but was not used during the tournament in Tanzania, with the likes of Akinkunmi Amoo, Wisdom Ubani and Olakunle Olusegun ahead of him in manager Manu Garba's pecking order of forwards.
A product of the Chelsea academy, Akande will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of another former Nigeria youth team invitee, Ademola Ola-Adebomi, who won the Premier League 2 Player of the Month for November 2023.
